Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In anticipation of the forthcoming Chhath Puja festivities in the city, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim addressed the media today and highlighted the preparations made for the event. He assured that the city is fully prepared to celebrate this significant festival with due grandeur and devotion.
The closure of Ravindra Sarovar necessitated the construction of 23 new ghats across the city to accommodate the Chhath Puja devotees.
Mayor Firhad Hakim emphasized that the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh residing in Kolkata are integral members of the community. As someone with roots in Bihar and currently serving as the Mayor of Kolkata, he expressed the city's commitment to their well-being and ensuring their festive celebrations.
He ensured the cleanliness and maintenance of the Chhath Ghats is a priority. Adequate lighting arrangements will be made, and the roads leading to the ghats will be refurbished to facilitate smooth movement.
Firhad drew a parallel between the grandeur of Durga Puja celebrated in Bihar and the enthusiastic celebration of Chhath in Bengal. He underscored that the city's preparations for Chhath Puja are comprehensive and all-encompassing. In a show of support and respect for Chhath Puja, Bengal grants a two-day holiday, in contrast to Bihar, which observes a one-day holiday for the occasion.
*Please note that Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where devotees offer prayers to the Sun God and seek his blessings for the prosperity and well-being of their families.
